  • DO NOT USE CERTIFECT doesn't deserve any stars I am a vet tech with 8 years experience and I have never seen this kind of reaction after applying a topical flea/tick preventative. I received a free sample of Certifect from the Merial sales rep in my clinic's area so I applied it on my normally healthy 6 year old 21 lb Jack Russell mix on Friday night and he is still acting ill it is now Sunday. This isn't printed on the label but after doing some research I found that Certifect can cause hypothermia seizures vomiting diarrhea uncoordination lethargy on the label and possible liver failure. My little guy began acting strangly yesterday the morning after applying this medication. He was lethargic depressed walking uncoordinated and gagging all day. Anyone that knows the personality of a Jack Russel knows that is isn't normal. I became very worried last night so I checked his vital signs. His heart rate was only 60 when his normal resting heart rate about 88. His temperate was only 99.7 degrees normal dog's temp is 100102.5 degrees. I wasn't sure what to do so I gave him a good bath with a lot of dish soap and water. I scrubbed the medication off the best I could. I wrapped in up in warm towels after drying him off and kept a close eye on him all night. Needless to say I was very worried and it was a stressful night. Like I said it's almost been 48 hours since applying Certifect and he is still groggy. I've had to sedate animals at work for various medical procedures and the way he is acting is like a dog after waking up from sedation.
Certifect not recommended Caution the packaging will tell you that the drug can cause lethargy. I have an 8 pound dog that is 1.75 years old. He has used Frontline Plus since I first took him to the vet after bringing him home. Frontline Plus never caused a bad reaction. He had a tick attach over the summer and I found others on him in. I spoke with the vet who said that the ticks were becoming resistant to the current formulation and that a new formulation would be out soon. Certifect came out and the vet recommended it. I applied it to my dog and he had a bad reaction. He couldn't really walk well seemed highly drugged drunklike and was very slow and quiet. He is normally a very lively and playful dog and has tons of energy. The next day he was very quiet and sleepy. It took about 48 hours for him to seem more normal. Luckily by the third day he was back to normal. I will never use Certifect again. Be careful and watch your dog after applying. Amitraz seems to be the ingredient that causes the problems.
